Donald Trump’s advisors are urging Trump to develop a plan to exit the war with Iran, fearing negative political consequences for the current US president, the Wall Street Journal reports.
According to the advisors, it should be proven that the United States has already achieved all its goals in Iran, informed sources told the publication. They say Trump’s conservative base has generally supported war with Iran so far, but advisers fear that support could wane in a protracted conflict.
The publication’s interviewers noted that Trump’s attention had been drawn to the results of public opinion polls showing that a majority of Americans opposed the war.
In addition, the Wall Street Journal wrote, Trump’s advisers fear that his level of support will be affected by rising fuel prices caused by the war in the Middle East.
Officially, the US presidential administration announced that it is confident of Americans’ support for Trump’s actions. The Wall Street Journal quoted White House press secretary Carolyn Leavitt as saying: “The vast majority of Americans support ending the threat posed by the Iranian regime and support killing terrorists, and this is what President Trump will achieve.”
