The Moscow City Court sentenced Ukrainian journalist Irina Zemlyan in absentia to 13 years in a public order colony, the Russian Prosecutor General’s Office reported.
She was convicted under articles of assaulting a representative of a foreign state, incitement to hatred and hostility, and publishing “false information” about the Russian army.
As reported in the investigation, on May 9, 2022, Zemljana, along with other unidentified persons, attacked the Russian Ambassador to Poland Sergei Andreev when he was going to lay a wreath at the monument to Soviet soldiers at a cemetery in Warsaw. The red liquid was then poured over the ambassador (it later turned out to be beet juice) and the St. George ribbon was torn off him. The demonstrators chanted “Fascists!” attic.
Investigators also say that in May 2022 and March 2024, Zemilyan published posts on social networks containing “false statements about crimes allegedly committed by Russian military personnel during the war.”
The Russian authorities arrested two colleagues in absentia and included them on the international wanted list.
