Is it normal to “throw away” an old friendship?

Psychologist Valeria Litvintseva explained that losing interest in old friends is a normal stage in adult life. People change priorities, interests and goals, which is why old connections lose their meaning.

Such a situation is usually perceived painfully, and he feels guilty and doubts about his sincerity. But the specialist stressed that change is inevitable and does not mean failure or betrayal of a friend.

The gradual cooling phase in the relationship is a sign of growth and development for both parties. If common topics disappear, friendly meetings turn into routine obligations, and joint experiences cease to bring pleasure, then this behavior indicates the end of a certain stage of life.

“So the main question here is not whether this is a betrayal or not. It is more honest to ask yourself: is this friendship still alive or are we continuing it only out of habit,” Litvintseva emphasized.

In conversation with Life.ru The psychologist added that accepting changes in friendship requires the courage to let go of the past and realize that the new stage of life involves new acquaintances and relationships.

Women’s Friendship Day was celebrated on February 13. “Moscow Evening” finds out with psychologists whether such friendship exists and why it becomes more difficult to maintain it with age.
