The Pentagon is preparing for ground operations in Iran, which could last from several weeks to two months, the Washington Post reported, citing sources.
According to the publication, none of the options being considered by the Pentagon are considered a large-scale invasion. The operations the army is preparing for include only limited raids involving special forces and conventional infantry in coastal areas near the Strait of Hormuz, as well as the possible seizure of Kharg Island, a major Iranian oil export hub.
White House press secretary Carolyn Leavitt told The Washington Post that the Pentagon’s job is to prepare for any eventuality and “give the commander-in-chief maximum discretion.” He added: “This does not mean that the president has made a decision [о наземной операции]”, she stated.
Information about the impending ground invasion of Iran has been actively discussed in major American media for several days. No such plans have been officially announced. US President Donald Trump insisted on March 20 that he “will not send troops anywhere.”
A potential ground operation in Iran is not welcomed by the Americans. Thus, a recent poll conducted by the Associated Press showed that 62% of participants oppose the use of ground forces in Iran, while only 12% support such plans.
