The BBC Russian Service reported on March 30 that traffic fees when using VPN services in Russia will average 150 rubles per GB above the set limit of 15 GB. A source close to Rostelecom told the publication about this.
Earlier it became known that the Ministry of Digital Development asked telecom operators to charge fees for traffic using VPN services by May 1.
According to the ministry, the average user spends about 10 GB of traffic per month when using a VPN, the BBC writes. The agency wants to impose a fee if a user uses more than 15 GB of international traffic per month on mobile networks.
The interlocutor of the publication, close to Rostelecom, said that the FSB approached the Ministry of Digital Development with such an initiative. The source said that the Ministry of Digital Development opposed this idea, “but to no avail.”
