Military courts in the Russian Federation received nine times more rape cases in 2025 than before the war in 2021 – Meduza

Russia’s garrison courts, which hear cases against the military, received 116 criminal cases under the article on rape in 2025 (131 Criminal Code), which is 8.9 times more than in 2021, when the courts received 13 such cases. This was stated in the material of the publication “This is the Case,” which studied judicial statistics since 2018.

The number of sexual assault cases has increased more than fivefold (132 criminal cases). In 2025, the courts received 132 such cases, and in 2021 before the war – 24.

According to “This is the matter”, since 2022, when the great war between Russia and Ukraine began, the garrison courts have received 549 cases brought under Articles 131 and 132 of the Criminal Code. There were at least 312 cases of crimes committed against minors, including 249 against those under 14 years of age.

In addition, according to judicial statistics, in 2025, garrison courts began to hear more often criminal cases brought under the articles of murder (102 of the Criminal Code) and infliction of grievous bodily harm resulting in death (Part 4 of Article 111 of the Criminal Code).

In 2025, the courts received 352 murder cases, while in 2021 – 21, that is, almost 17 times more. Cases of causing serious harm during the same period increased nine times – 135 compared to 15.

As the This Is the Case report notes, in 2022-2025, only 17% of military killings resulted in the deaths of fellow soldiers. In most cases, the victims were random military or civilian friends and acquaintances.
