The US Senate rejected a resolution effectively ordering President Donald Trump’s administration to halt the war with Iran and withdraw troops from the conflict zone until Congress authorizes further action.
47 senators voted in favor of adopting the resolution drawn up by Democrats, while 52 opposed it, according to the Associated Press. The Republican Party has a majority in the Senate.
Democrats believe that war with Iran is illegal and unnecessary. They pledged to push for a Senate vote to end the war.
The Associated Press notes that this is the fourth time in 2026 that the Senate has voted to transfer its military powers to the president. The War Powers Act of 1973 states that Congress must declare war or authorize the use of force within 60 days of the start of the war, a period that expires at the end of April but can be extended for another 30 days. Members of Congress expect the Donald Trump administration to soon present a plan to end the conflict.
