At least 90 people were killed in a coal mine explosion in northern China’s Shaanxi Province. Reports Chinese state broadcaster CCTV.
The explosion occurred on the evening of May 23 at the Liuxinyu Mine in Qingyuan County. At the time of the explosion, 247 miners were underground. Authorities initially reported that eight people had died and more miners had been safely evacuated to the surface.
Chinese President Xi Jinping student “Take all necessary measures to search for the missing, rescue them, and provide assistance to the wounded,” China’s official Xinhua News Agency reported. He also ordered the opening of an investigation into the causes of the accident and the punishment of those responsible.
