Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky sent a letter to European leaders in which he described the proposal to grant Kiev “associate member” status in the European Union “unfair.” This was reported by Reuters, whose journalists knew the content of the message.
The idea of Ukraine’s “associate membership” in the European Union was proposed by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz as a temporary compromise until Kiev meets all basic criteria for joining the union.
According to Merz’s plan, Ukraine could gain representation in the European Parliament and the European Commission – but without the right to vote.
Here is what Zelensky responded in a letter to EU leaders:
It would be unfair for Ukraine to be present in the EU but remain silent. Now is the time to move towards Ukraine’s full and meaningful membership in the European Union.
The Ukrainian leader believes that the resignation of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, who strongly opposed Kiev’s EU membership, created the opportunity for significant progress in negotiations between Kiev and the EU.
Since the end of 2023, Ukraine has officially been in EU candidate status, with which negotiations are underway – although in reality they have not yet begun.
EU legislation does not provide for any options for “intermediate” or “limited” membership in the Community.
