Three-time Olympic champion Vladislav Tretyak opened the football tournament at Sapsan Stadium

The Governor’s Cup football tournament of the Eastern Administrative District was held on May 23 at the FC Lokomotiv Moscow Academy at Sapsan Stadium. The guest of honor at the competition was Deputy of the State Duma of the Russian Federation, President of the Russian Hockey Federation, three-time Olympic champion, ten-time world hockey champion and member of the United Russia party Vladislav Tretyak.

Amateur teams from the Eastern Administrative Region participated in the competition in four age categories: 2019-2020, 2017-2018, 2015-2016, and 2013-2014 calendar years. A total of 24 teams took to the field. At the end of the tournament, the winners in the age groups received cups and prizes.

– The sports personality is developed since childhood. It was instilled in me by my father, a military pilot. He taught me three things: never miss training, listen to your coach and constantly learn new things. Today’s match showed that the men won thanks to these three principles. Every training session, every coach’s advice, and every new skill on the field strengthens the same athletic character that helps you survive in the decisive moment. Most importantly, sport is very popular among young people – it helps them make the right decision in favor of a healthy lifestyle. Tournaments like the Governor’s Cup give kids their first experience with collegiate wrestling, and teach them responsibility for the outcome and respect for their opponents, Tretiak said.

According to the Olympic champion, the capital has built a comprehensive football playing system – from clubs and school sections to sports schools, regional tournaments and major city events.

Football infrastructure is developing in all districts of the city. More than 1.4 thousand sports areas have been created for the game in Moscow, including about 140 full-sized fields in arenas, schools, universities, sports institutions, parks and natural areas. Every year the city hosts more than 700 football competitions, including team tournaments and district competitions.

The development of football is part of the overall strategy to spread mass sports in the capital. In 2025, more than 18,000 physical education and sports events were held in Moscow, in which 3.8 million people participated.
