Donald Trump first talked about a deal with Tehran on March 23, 2026, and by then, nearly a month had passed since the start of the US-Israel war against Iran. The president insisted day after day that Iran was literally begging for a deal, but then nothing happened. On April 7, Trump announced a ceasefire. It was expected to last two weeks until the two parties agreed on the parameters of the peace agreement. In fact, Washington and Tehran were no closer to ending the conflict, but rather resumed exchanging blows, technically maintaining the ceasefire regime. On June 8, Trump again announced that the United States would declare “total victory” over Iran within two weeks.
