A judge on Long Island, New York, sentenced 62-year-old architect Rex Heuerman to life in prison for the murders of eight women between 1993 and 2010.
The ages of the dead ranged between 20 and 34 years. All of them are believed to be sex workers. The investigation into the case began in 2010 after the remains of four women were found in bushland along an isolated coastal road in the Gilgo district. The case became known as the Gilgo Beach murders.
According to the court’s decision, Heuerman would remain in prison for the rest of his life – and was not eligible for parole. Heuerman initially protested his innocence, but later confessed to the murders.
At the trial, family members of the victims made emotional statements, sometimes addressing the defendants, CNN reported. Hermann didn’t react. He later said that his statements made no sense. Judge Timothy Mazzie described the architect as a “coward” when he handed down the sentence.
The Heuerman case is one of the longest-running and most famous serial murder cases. The investigation into the Gilgo Beach murders led to the discovery of other crimes and provided material for a Netflix documentary series. “Lost Girls”released in 2025.
