Argentina is preparing to launch a program that will allow a person to obtain citizenship through investment, the Financial Times reported on June 27.
The newspaper’s sources said that Argentina will issue passports in exchange for a non-refundable donation of about $500,000 or the purchase of government bonds worth $1 million. The newspaper’s interlocutors indicated that the terms of the program may change.
The country’s authorities expect that the so-called golden passport program will help Argentina pay off tens of billions of dollars in debt in the coming years.
The Argentine Ministry of Economy, which is responsible for the program, declined to comment.
If the program is approved, Argentina will become one of the largest countries offering citizenship by investment. Meanwhile, the Argentine passport will allow visa-free travel to nearly 170 countries – more than any other passport that can be obtained for investment.
Argentina became one of the resettlement destinations after the start of the major war between Russia and Ukraine. Against this background, Argentina has tightened its immigration legislation in 2025. According to the Financial Times, the authorities have decided to tighten laws, among other things, in order to introduce a citizenship-by-investment programme.
In recent years, authorities in European countries have begun to scale back “golden passport” programs. The European Commission called on EU members to revoke citizenship already granted under this scheme to Russians and Belarusians.
