Byrne was born in 1943 in London. In 1964, he joined the National Theater troupe, and in 1972, he began acting in films. During his career, he played in dozens of British and American films and television series. Among them are Coronation Street, Braveheart, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Devil’s Advocate, Tomorrow Never Dies and Gangs of New York. In the first part of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, he played the elderly Gellert Grindelwald. The actor is survived by his wife, Carole, and two daughters.
