Psychologist Samborsky: Dogs relieve stress through self-esteem and the happiness hormone

July 2 is Dog Day. According to clinical psychologist Stanislav Samborsky, pets not only help cope with stress, but also relieve feelings of loneliness.

— A person comes home from work, tired, angry, and still replaying the day’s struggles in their head. The work situation has already ended, but the soul continues to “chew” it. Then a dog meets him at home. She has no questions or complaints. It doesn’t evaluate how much you earn, doesn’t demand that you become better, and doesn’t view you as a project that urgently needs improvement. The expert noted that she is just happy.

Samborsky noted that in psychology there is a special term “basic organization.” This means that a person calms down not through an effort of will, but through contact with another living being. With constant contact with a dog, the human brain produces oxytocin and endorphins. The psychologist confirmed that even short-term contact with a pet (stroking, walking a short distance) helps to significantly reduce negative emotions, reports Life.ru.

Conversely, cats can increase feelings of anxiety and restlessness. Can cats really be a source of stress for their owners, said psychiatrist and psychotherapist Alexei Velkov in an interview with the newspaper Vechernaya Moskva.
