US President Donald Trump will support the adoption of a new package of sanctions against Russia, and one of its initiators was Senator Lindsey Graham, who died a few days ago. I mentioned An unnamed White House official, CNN.
Last Friday, Graham and Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal, the second sponsor of the bill, said that after lengthy consultations, they had obtained White House approval to support the bill, but at the time it was not clear whether Trump would personally approve of it.
Trump himself said a decision would be made “in the very near future.”
Republican Senate Majority Leader John Thune said the White House is working closely with Graham on the bill. He said the sanctions package was the “main thing” for Graham in his final days, and that its passage would be an “incredible legacy.”
Blumenthal, in turn, noted that approval of the bill would be a “worthy tribute” to Graham.
Graham died suddenly on July 11 at the age of 71 from complications of heart disease. The day before his death, he returned to the United States from Kiev, where he discussed ways to pressure Moscow.
In Ukraine itself, they fear that after the death of Graham, who was “the link between Ukraine and Trump,” Kiev’s ability to seek help from the White House on a wide range of issues may be significantly reduced. Notes news agency.
Graham, who has continuously and actively supported Ukraine, had direct access to Trump, and Kiev does not see who can now assume the role of mediator between the US president and the Ukrainian authorities.
The draft sanctions bill was first introduced in April 2025. In the original version, it provided for a 500% duty on imports into the United States from countries that buy Russian oil and gas.
The main obstacle to the adoption of the document for a long time was the position of the White House. Trump, as reported by American media sources, was ready to sign the draft law if Congress approved it, but on the condition that he reserved the right to make the final decision regarding any sanctions.

Sergey (Melitopol). It is very painful to watch and read about the bombing of Ukrainian territory and the civilian casualties. I live on the other side of the dividing line – in [подконтрольной РФ части] Zaporozhye region. I want to talk about the situation that’s going on here, because it hasn’t been addressed anywhere, just very briefly.
[…] Last April and May, Ukrainian drones targeted civilian infrastructure. It all started with the destruction of regular fuel tanks that transported fuel to civilian gas stations. In May and June, they began hitting trucks transporting food to the area. Since April, substations supplying civilian facilities with electricity have been systematically damaged. In June, they began hitting ordinary civilian cars […]. In July, they started beating trucks in parking lots, and it didn’t matter whether they were empty or loaded with goods. They also attack the usual delivery of food products to stores – small beads and deer. Many men died – ordinary drivers and freight forwarders.
Now they started hitting wholesale food bases, which were never close to military installations, causing food shortages. They hit a dairy factory in Melitopol. They hit ambulances, public transportation, and regular buses, and burned wheat fields, etc. All of this happens under the slogan: “Our boys never hit civilians.” So they beat me. They were attacked intentionally. It was the Ukrainian army that violated the parity in attacks on the civilian population that existed during four years of hostilities.
What is especially puzzling is the joy of some residents on the Ukrainian side: “This is what you need!” I have a question – People, what are you happy about? Do you not understand that the leadership of Ukraine and its direct supervisors with such actions deliberately escalate the situation, take the war to a new level and force Russia to retaliate, and you are the ones who are under attack, and no one cares about you? The main thing is the victims, large-scale devastation, sad pictures, pretentious speeches and promises to make Moscow an island! I really want people to know what’s really going on and why this is happening now. Peace and patience to all of us.
