A football fan has lost more than $160,000 (£134,000) after placing a seemingly sure bet on Argentina beating Saudi Arabia.

Online betting platform TAB has confirmed that someone planted $160,000 in Lionel Messi’s side to kick off his World Cup campaign with a win in Doha.

The Copa America champions are considered one of the tournament favorites alongside fellow South Americans Brazil.

However, the third-placed side in the Fifa rankings couldn’t even draw against their 51st-ranked counterparts, losing 2-1 on the opening matchday three.

At odds of $1.13 the bet would have netted the fan $180,800 (£90,000), which is a profit of just $20,000 (£16,000) compared to the huge sum they have had to put in the first place.

Argentina took the lead with their talisman scoring from the penalty spot, but two quick second-half Saudi goals produced one of the biggest upsets in World Cup history, less than a week after the start of the tournament.

Elsewhere, football fans inspired by Saudi Arabia’s win backed Australia to do the impossible and beat defending World Cup champions France.

Graham Arnold’s side still face a monumental task despite Didier Deschamps’ Blues carrying a weakened squad hampered by injuries to key players such as Karim Benzema, Paul Pogba and N’Golo Kante.

But those setbacks have inspired some punters to bet on the Socceroos. A football fan bets $700 (£589) to $12 (£10) for a win in Australia, which would pay out $8,400 (£7,000).

Another put $500 (£420) on the Australians, but at slightly shorter odds of $10 (£8), equating to possible winnings of $5,000 (£4,209).

World Cups are notorious for dark horses that spring huge upsets from the rest of the competition and advance deep into the tournament, as well as teams that are expected to go deep in the tournament that crumble early.

Croatia reached the final in 2018 and a bettor backed them to go further and win the competition, betting $5,000 on Luka Modric’s side.

At odds of $51 (£42), a Croatian triumph would result in winnings of $255,000 (£214,000).

Another punter bet $1,000 (£840) on the Swiss to win the tournament, with possible winnings of $101,000 (£85,000) with the Swiss listed at $101 (£85).
