Baba Indrajith scored a brilliant 118 from 125 balls as the South Zone finished day two of the 2022 Duleep Trophy Final against the West Zone at 318 for seven. Indrajith’s ton allowed the South Zone to surrender in the stumps on Thursday, September 22 in Coimbatore with a 48-run lead, answering the West Zone first innings total of 270.

The South Zone lost Mayank Agarwal early for nine as he stole one from Atit Sheth and was caught on the first slip. Rohan Kunnummal looked good for his 31 before landing a convincing delivery from Jaydev Unadkat behind the wickets.

Indrajith and South Zone skipper Hanuma Vihari (25) then added 61 for the third wicket to stabilize the innings. Vihari, however, couldn’t continue to score big. He was trapped by Sheth immediately after South Zone’s total broke the 100 point mark.

Indrajith then found another capable partner in the experienced Manish Pandey. The two frustrated the westcourt bowlers, adding an important 105 for the fourth wicket. Pandey looked good for half a century when he was beaten by Tanush Kotian for a quick 48 from 69 balls.

At the other end, Indrajith, who controlled the innings brilliantly, hit a well-deserved cent by hitting Shams Mulani towards the middle of the wicket for a quick single. His wonderful innings ended when he clipped an Unadkat drive to cover. The 28-year-old Tamil Nadu batter’s shot featured 14 fours.

Krishnappa Gowtham frustrates West Zone after century of Baba Indrajith

If West Zone was hoping for relief after Indrajith’s wicket, it was not to be. Unadkat managed to fire Ricky Bhui (four) cheaply, but Krishnappa Gowtham swung his bat and broke 43 on just 55 balls. His shot included three fours and as many sixes, taking the South Zone past the West Zone’s first inning score.

Gowtham eventually fell to Sheth, becoming the pacer’s third victim of the day. At the stumps on Day 2 of the 2022 Duleep Trophy Final, T Ravi Teja was at bat on 26 and R Sai Kishore on six.

Earlier in the day, West Zone picked up their first inning at 250 for eight, but could only add 20 runs to their tally overnight. Het Patel, undefeated in 96, could not complete his century. He was fired for 98 by Sai Kishore.

The left-arm spinner also claimed the wicket of Chintan Gaja (10) to complete another five-wicket run.
