Having become the youngest player to top the men’s world rankings, 19-year-old Carlos Alcaraz is already planning to ensure that his stint as world number one is a long one.

The Spaniard rose to the top of the ATP rankings this month when he won his first US Open Grand Slam title at Flushing Meadows.

“One of my goals is to finish (the year) at number one,” Alcaraz told the ATP website.

“Now that I’m there, my goal is to stay as many days, weeks and months as possible. Let’s work towards it”.

Alcaraz and fellow Spaniard Rafa Nadal, who won both the Australian and French Open titles in 2022, are the only players who have secured their spots at the ATP Finals in Turin.

The men’s season closing tournament is played between the top eight singles and doubles players and Alcaraz has his sights set on it.

“I have several tournaments ahead of the ATP Finals and we’re going to give it our all,” Alcaraz said. “I have several important tournaments and one goal is to try to win the ATP Finals.

“You have to do what you’ve been doing, feel comfortable with what you do, have fun, be happy on the court, play tennis – and that’s what I’m going to do. That’s the secret for me. To try to forget about everything else and enjoy playing tennis.”

Novak Djokovic, winner of 21 Grand Slams, praised Alcaraz, calling the Spaniard a “great addition” to tennis.

“I congratulate Alcaraz on winning the US Open,” said Djokovic, who missed the US Open for not being vaccinated against COVID-19, backstage at the Laver Cup in London.

“He did it in an incredible way… He’s 19 years old and he’s already number 1 in the world. I mean, it’s amazing what he’s accomplished so far.

“He is a great addition to our sport, a great star in the making. Well, he’s already noticed the Grand Slam champion, so we can’t talk about him as a future, because he’s already a present.”
