San Sebastian, 22 September (EFE) – Cesc Gay (Barcelona, 1967) presented his latest film “Stories You Can’t Tell” at the San Sebastian Festival today, which will hit theaters in November, a comedy in which closer to women.

“It was clear to me that I wanted to do this after Truman, Felix, and One Gun in Each Hand, because there is something in women’s stories. It costs me more,” the director admits in an interview with EFE, “but when you find it, you are very happy.”

With incredible actors playing very small roles, from Anna Castillo to José Coronado, “Stories You Can’t Tell” uses the “gun in each hand” scheme, small and funny stories that somehow connect with each other, only in this case, “rather than focusing on men and how badly we get along,” he says, “he shows the most ridiculous side of people and why we lie and manipulate so much.”

There are five chapters, each with its own title track, that stylishly begin with a three-part story by Chino Darin, Anna Castillo and Javier Rey, with a vaudeville tone: “A world of doors and a dog in the middle.” Gay explains.

“Ricardo (Darin) is already retired,” he laughs. “No, we stayed with Chino, because he made a very good couple with Anna, and I liked the triangle with Javier, because he creates tension, this rigidity of him, this Galician feature of not knowing where he is. Also the luck that may come,” says the director, knowing that these “great actors” are telling him “yes” because he is stealing little time.

The director of “In the City” tells Efe that he never thinks of a role for an actor because he prefers not to write for people: “I think it’s better to create characters and then they can’t be trusted.”

Sometimes because the stars can’t, others because they get sick. Gay says Pepon Nieto called him to tell him he had covid the day before filming. The director was at the Gaudí Awards with Javier Camara and told him: “Tomorrow you will stay in Barcelona.”

“At the end of the day, he played the part of Pepon, but spent the whole day fiddling with the question that he was a replacement,” laughs the Catalan.

“The beauty of comedy is that it has a lot of tones, I always say it’s like painting, you have to find the color, especially in movies like this one with five different episodes to balance everything that’s not very different tones in them” .

Alexandra Jimenez, Nora Navas and Maribel Verdu are three friends, actresses who have known each other for a long time and matched at the casting. “There’s a huge comedy in all three,” Gay says.

The director and playwright is now at the point where he knows what he has to write, he says, “I still don’t know what (…) You have to let it come out and then decide if it’s going to be a vase. or a plate, find the best place for this stuff.”

So far, he says, he’s “comfortable” with comedies, though he doesn’t know “how long” that will last.

“We’ll see, now is the time,” he says. That same age puts you in less stressful places, at least in my case. You take it relatively, what you feel at 30 is different than what you feel at 50. I don’t know if there’s something about comedy that I like more, but when it goes somewhere, it follows there is something”.
