Valencia, 20 September (EFE) — Chef Eric Gil, representing France, was the winner of the 2022 World Paella Day Cup, held on Tuesday in Marinereta de Valencia and attended by ten chefs from around the world.

In second place is Argentina, represented by chef Juani Kittlen, and in third place is Finland, with Jaani Paskoski, sources at the organization said.

The jury for this international paella competition was formed by Belen Arias, President of the Academy of Gastronomy of the Valencian Community; Binhui Jiang, second prize at the Sueca Valencian Paella International Competition; Noelia Pascual, chef and World Paella Day II Cup winner; José Luis García Berlanga, owner of the Berlanga restaurant, and Modesto Granados, designer of the Delicious Valencia brand.

In addition to the winners, it was attended by chefs representing Ecuador, Mexico, Italy, Argentina, Switzerland, Canada, Japan and the United Arab Emirates.

This third edition of World Paella Day featured new variations of paella rice, some inspired by their different countries of origin. An example is Japan with Chinese crab, green onions and nettles. And also Finnish, made from reindeer, boletus, onions, tomatoes and blueberries.

Among those present at the event were the Deputy Mayor of Valencia Sandra Gomez, Advisor for Tourism and Internationalization of the Valencia City Council and President of Visit València Emiliano Garcia, Regional Secretary for Tourism Francesc Colomer and other government officials.

Valencia Deputy Mayor Sandra Gomez said the most important thing this September 20th, World Paella Day, is “to share what unites Valencia with the rest of the world, our most international dish. A dish that is much more than a recipe: it is a ritual, a way to share with family and friends.”

He stressed that “paella allows us to design our food, appreciate our rice and Valencia’s great pantry: vegetable garden, Mediterranean, which also positions us as the organic food capital of the world.”

Francesc Colomer, Regional Secretary for Tourism, noted that World Paella Day “was born as an idea with a long history and international scope” and acknowledged the “huge vision of Valencia”, involving Turespania in the parallel development of many activities around the world to promote World Paella Day”.

For his part, Emiliano Garcia, Advisor for Tourism and Internationalization, stressed that “September 20 is the day when the people of Valencia can be proud of their most traditional cuisine. We want you to breathe combos, friendship, family and, above all, good Valencian rice and good local produce every time you eat paella.”
