The Laver Cup match between Stefanos Tsitsipas and Diego Schwartzman was briefly interrupted by a climate change protester who set his arm on fire while he was on the pitch.

The protest at London’s O2 Arena came as Roger Federer prepared to play the final game of his career and with the 41-year-old sitting pitchside.

The protester broke through security to enter the field before staging the protest, setting his right arm on fire.

The incident was not shown by broadcasters, but court footage showed the man screaming in pain.

He was then kicked out of court by security and arrested, according to a Laver Cup statement. A Met Police statement said the man was taken to hospital.

“A man entered the pitch this afternoon and was promptly removed by security,” a Laver Cup official said.

“The game was interrupted briefly, it has been stopped and the situation is being handled by the police.”

The man was wearing a t-shirt that read: “End UK Private Jets”.

The match resumed after the man was arrested and there was a further delay as liquid was drained from the pitch.

“It came out of nowhere, I’ve never had an incident like this on the court,” Tsitsipas said afterwards. “I hope he’s okay.”

Earlier this year, a semi-final match at Roland Garros was interrupted by a climate change protester who chained herself to the net.

As an international sport, the best tennis players in the world depend on air travel between tournaments.
