Rome, (EFE) — Statements by former Forza Italia president and leader Silvio Berlusconi that Russian President Vladimir Putin intends to start a war in Ukraine have sparked controversy in Italy, where general elections are being held on Sunday.

The tycoon assured on Thursday evening in an interview with the public television channel RAI’s “Porta a Porta” program that Putin started the conflict, provoked by his ministers and his party, in order to “replace the Zelensky government with one of the worthy people.”

According to Berlusconi, Putin “fell” for starting the war because “a mission from the two pro-Russian republics of Donbas informed him that the Ukrainian president has stepped up his forces’ attacks against them and their borders, and
that the troops should enter, reach Kyiv in a week, replace the Zelensky government with a government of decent people, and return in a week.”

Criticism of their political rivals

These statements by the former prime minister about a Russian invasion of Ukraine have been heavily criticized by Berlusconi’s various political rivals in Italy.

For Democratic Party (DP) general secretary Enrico Letta, it is “unimaginable to hear this nonsense” from a Western leader.

“Phrases (Berlusconi) are subversive words. He spoke like a Putin general, this is something very serious,” criticized the leader of the Aksion party, Carlo Calenda.

Nuances of Berlusconi

Considering the controversy his words provoked, Berluconi clarified this Friday that the aggression against Ukraine is “unjustified and unacceptable.”

“It was enough to see the full interview, and not just an extrapolated phrase, to understand what my thoughts and thoughts of Forza Italia are: we will always be with the EU and NATO,” the four-time Italian president wrote on social networks. .
