Twenty people were injured in a stampede when thousands of people crowded counters selling tickets for an India vs Australia Twenty20 cricket match in southern India, police said on Thursday.
The crush of cricket fans happened when ticket sales started three wickets away from the Gymkhana ground in Hyderabad, the state capital of Telangana.
Nearly 30,000 people waited in long lines for just 3,000 tickets for Sunday’s match, and police were using batons to try to control the crowd.
Seven of the 20 injured were hospitalized in serious condition, a policeman said on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to reporters.
India host Australia in a three-game T20 series in preparation for the T20 World Cup in Australia next month.
