Cristiano Ronaldo has left Manchester United by mutual consent, it has been confirmed.
United have released a statement announcing they have reached a mutual agreement with the player to terminate his contract following the 37-year-old’s explosive interview with Piers Morgan in which he criticized Erik ten Hag and club officials .
We return here to the events of nine tumultuous days.
sunday november 13
Talk TV began airing clips from Morgan’s 90-minute interview with Ronaldo, which was scheduled to air the following Wednesday and Thursday. In the first clip, the 37-year-old said he felt “betrayed” by Manchester United and believed they were trying to force him out of the club.
Then, in The Sun, Morgan revealed that when asked Ronaldo about current United boss Erik ten Hag, the Portuguese striker said: “I don’t have any respect for him because he doesn’t show me no respect.” Ronaldo was also “extremely dismissive” of former United team-mate Wayne Rooney.

Further clips from the interview were released in which Ronaldo explained why he did not take part in United’s pre-season tour of Australia in July.
He revealed his partner Georgina Rodriguez and baby daughter Bella Esmeralda were hospitalized with a ‘big problem’, just months after their newborn son died, but claimed he was not entirely believed by the United hierarchy.
Later that day, in another clip, Ronaldo alleged that United owners Joel and Avram Glazer “don’t care” about the club.
tuesday november 15
The latest clip saw Ronaldo open up about the death of his newborn son in April, which he described as “the most difficult time” of his life.
He said: “As you know football goes on, so fast, many competitions, football doesn’t stop. We had many, many competitions. And that moment was probably the hardest moment I’ve had in my life. Me and my family, especially Gio, it was difficult.
Ronaldo arrived at the World Cup in Qatar and appeared to share an icy exchange with United and Portugal team-mate Bruno Fernandes.
Wednesday November 16
As millions of people scoured their program planners to find out which Talk TV channel was actually on, the first part of the “bombshell” interview finally aired. Among the new revelations are how close Ronaldo was to joining Manchester City ahead of his return to Old Trafford, and that Sir Alex Ferguson persuaded him not to join their rivals.
He also hit out at the club’s owners and the appointment of Ralf Rangnick as caretaker boss after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was sacked, saying ‘you should bring in a top manager, not a sporting director’.
Thursday November 17
Part two aired with Ronaldo saying he thought Manchester United had “cut their legs” and didn’t want him to “shine” or listen to advice as his relationship with the club deteriorated.
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner also opened up about his future, saying: “It’s hard for me to say that I won’t be coming back to Manchester United, but whatever, let’s see what happens.”
Former Red Devils team-mate Gary Neville has called on United to cancel Ronaldo’s contract in the coming days.
friday november 18
United broke their silence, issuing a statement saying they had begun to take action following the interview.
It read: “Manchester United have taken appropriate action this morning in response to Cristiano Ronaldo’s recent media interview. We will not comment further until this process is complete. »

Ronaldo made a surprise appearance at a Portuguese press conference in Qatar and described himself as ‘bulletproof and ironclad’. He added: “The atmosphere is great, no problems, we are completely focused.”

A statement read: “The club thanks him for his immense contribution over two spells at Old Trafford, scoring 145 goals in 346 appearances, and wishes him and his family the best.
“Everyone at Manchester United remains focused on continuing the team’s progress under Erik Ten Hag and working together to achieve success on the pitch.”
Ronaldo released his own statement which read: “Following conversations with Manchester United, we have mutually agreed to end our contract early.
