French fans are furious that Didier Deschamps left Ousmane Dembele for their UEFA Nations League clash against Austria tonight (September 22).
The Blues are looking to build momentum ahead of the FIFA World Cup later this year as they seek to defend their crown.
The pressure is mounting on Deschamps after a poor run of results. The French have failed to win any of their four Nations League clashes this summer, including two home defeats to Croatia and Denmark.
They are looking to become the first nation to retain the World Cup since Brazil in 1962.
Ahead of the clash with Austria at the Stade de France, Deschamps named his roster for the encounter in which they are heavy favourites. The 53-year-old seems to have opted for a 3-4-1-2 formation with Antoine Griezmann behind Oliver Giroud and Kylian Mbappe.
However, the fans are extremely upset that Dembele hasn’t made the starting line-up, despite having a great season so far for Barcelona. The speedy winger appears to have overcome his injury struggles to score twice and provide four assists in eight appearances so far.
Dembele is yet to start for his country in 2022. Supporters took to Twitter to express their disappointment that he once again didn’t get the chance:
France boss Didier Deschamps looks at the positive side of Antoine Griezmann’s current situation
Antoine Griezmann is a crucial player for France but faces a bizarre situation with Atletico Madrid only playing him for half an hour per game.
Atleti are reportedly trying to avoid activating a clause that would see them paying Barcelona a huge fee to keep him. They will have to pay the Catalans €50m if Griezmann plays more than 45 minutes in more than 50% of their games this season.
The France international has played more than 30 minutes in just one of the eight matches so far this season.
Griezmann was a key member of the France squad that became world champions in Russia in 2018, as he scored four goals. However, Deschamps tries to see the positive side of the strange circumstances.
The manager said (per L’Equipe):
“At least he’s not tired. He has a situation you know. I will not go into this area. This limits his playing time. On the playing time, granted, he remains a decisive player for his club. He aspires to better, to more. It’s been a while since he last did 90 minutes.
Griezmann has started just one game so far this season, scoring twice and providing two assists in eight appearances.
