Energy crisis: French shops will be required to close the doors when the air conditioner is on

The French government, as one of the measures to save energy that has risen sharply in price, is going to limit the operating time of neon advertising, as well as to oblige stores to keep the doors closed when the air conditioner is on.

France’s environmental minister, Agnès Pannier-Runachet, told the Journal du Dimanche newspaper that the new rules, already in place in some regions, will soon be made mandatory across the country.

According to Panier-Runachet, she will issue two decrees in the coming days.

“The first will extend the ban on illuminated advertising from 1 a.m. to 6 a.m., regardless of the size of the city. The second will ban shops from keeping their doors open when air conditioning or heating is on,” the minister said.

In another interview with radio station RMC, Pannier-Runache called it absurd to keep the doors open while the air conditioner was running.

The shop will be fined up to 750 euros for trying to continue this habit.

The requirement to turn off luminous signs at night is already in force in France in cities with a population of less than 800 thousand people. An exception has been made for airports and stations.

Energy prices soared in Europe last year, and then the crisis was exacerbated by Russia’s attack on Ukraine.

Russia is reducing the flow of gas to Europe, and the authorities of many European countries and experts do not rule out that in the winter it will be necessary to introduce restrictions on gas consumption, primarily by industry.

It’s hot in France and much of Europe right now, and it’s also increasing energy consumption as everyone turns on the air conditioners.
