England face Iran in Qatar on Monday as the two nations play their first match of the 2022 World Cup.

Gareth Southgate’s side will be looking to establish a marker in Group B, seeing their opponents prepare for what look to be tougher outings against the United States and Wales.

However, anything can happen in a major tournament like this, so the Three Lions must avoid complacency or they risk going into their remaining group games with even more pressure on their shoulders.

And there’s already a lot of pressure on a team that reached the Euro final last summer before losing to Italy on penalties in London.

Here’s everything you need to know.

When is it?

England v Iran kicks off at 1pm GMT (4pm local time) on Monday 21 November.

The Group B match will take place at the Khalifa International Stadium in Doha.

How can I watch it?

BBC One will broadcast the game live, and it will also be available to stream live on BBC iPlayer.

The Independentmeanwhile, will provide live updates of all build-ups, in-game action and post-game fallout.

What’s up with the team?

James Maddison has spent part of this week training alone, having been substituted in the first half of Leicester’s win over West Ham before the international break. Struggling with a knee problem, the midfielder could well miss here.

Meanwhile, Manchester City defender Kyle Walker has confirmed he will be out for the game but the right-back expects to be fit in time for England’s next outing – against the States. -United.

Kalvin Phillips has been included in Southgate’s squad despite barely taking the pitch for Man City this season, so it would be a surprise if he started in the Three Lions midfield here.

Meanwhile, Iranian striker Sardar Azmoun was injured ahead of the tournament and has been trying to prove his fitness ever since, meaning his appearance against England is on hold.

Iran will likely sit back and look to frustrate England, hoping for a draw or even a platform to snatch a narrow victory. The Three Lions, however, should have the quality to bring down Iran; it may just be a question of whether they can create an opening sooner or later in the game. If England strike early, Iran will be forced to change tactics, which could well see them tear apart. England 4-0 Iran.
