‘Kane is fine and back in training’ England captain ready for USA

England face the United States in Group B of the World Cup on Friday in Qatar. The Three Lions won their opener in style against Iran, claiming a 6-2 win as Bukayo Saka, Jude Bellingham, Raheem Sterling and Jack Grealish were all on the scoresheet for Gareth Southgate’s side .

Harry Kane has shaken off an injury scare and is fit to play after undergoing an ankle scan this week, while Harry Maguire has also declared himself ready to start following an illness.

England will want to end an unwanted record and earn their first victory against the United States at a World Cup. The United States beat England in the 1950 World Cup, before Rob Green’s error led to a 1-1 draw in South Africa in 2010.

This American side arrived in Qatar with high expectations but were held back in their opener by Wales, despite dominating in the first half. Greg Berhalter’s side couldn’t handle Kieffer Moore’s physique but will seek an answer at Al Bayt Stadium. Follow all the latest World Cup news from England ahead of the game against USA below.

Gareth Southgate said it would be a “brave decision” to leave Harry Kane out of England’s starting line-up against the United States after it was confirmed the forward had come to training in good health.

Kane suffered a knock after an awkward challenge from Morteza Pouraliganji in England’s 6-2 win over Iran on Monday – the national team’s biggest win at the start of a major tournament.

The Spurs striker, who has a history of ankle problems, played for 25 minutes but was seen limping after the game and underwent a precautionary examination.

However, Kane returned to training without issue and Southgate suggested his captain would feature from the start on Friday.

“Harry is fine,” he said. “He came to training, no problems, so it would be a brave decision to leave him out of the starting squad.”

World Cup 2022: England vs USA

There will be a strong Premier League contingent on the American side on Friday, with Chelsea’s Christian Pulisic and Arsenal goalkeeper Matt Turner joined by the Fulham duo of Antonee Robinson and Tim Ream.

Joining them in the setup are Brenden Aaronson and Tyler Adams of Leeds, the latter hoping to lead the team to a famous victory on Friday.

“It would mean a lot,” said the 23-year-old captain as the United look to maintain their World Cup unbeaten record against England, which includes a famous 1-0 win in 1950 and a draw 1-1 60 years later.

“I think the biggest thing would be that it would mean a lot to the team because we’ve been trying to move this thing forward over the last three years.

“We’re moving in the right direction, so I think ultimately capitalizing on tomorrow would mean we’re continuing to move in the right direction.”

World Cup 2022: England vs USA

United boss Gregg Berhalter called England a ‘tremendous opponent’ and praised Gareth Southgate – despite being passed over by the England boss ahead of the World Cup clash in Friday.

An impressive 6-2 win over Iran in Monday’s Group B opener means Southgate’s men will seal their progress to the knockout stages with one game to spare if they beat the United States at Al Khor .

USA head into Friday’s encounter at Al Bayt Stadium looking to build on their 1-1 draw with Wales, but Berhalter is wary of the threat posed by England, which he has described as a “frightening” prospect in the preparation.

The US boss praised Southgate for making England’s jersey “a cape rather than a straitjacket” since taking over at a low level in 2016, before leading them to the World Cup semi-finals and the Euro final last year.

“I think when he first took office it was very similar to the position I first took,” said Berhalter, who was appointed in late 2018 as the United States United were rebuilding after failing to reach the World Cup that year.

“Trying to reshape the identity of the team, to refocus, to work with a group of younger players, so in this case very similar.

“Right after some of the stuff over the last few months, the pressure in the English media, or in England in general, is huge and I think that’s different.

“These guys (in the US media) give me a hard time from time to time, but I don’t think it’s on the scale that Gareth has.

“But we all know this is a results-driven business and we are all held accountable for the results on the ground.

“I think he’s done a great job. I’ve been saying for a year and a half that his record at major tournaments is exceptional and there’s no denying that – fourth place in 2018, second place at the Euros.

“He did a great job with his team. They got off to a good start and they are a formidable opponent. It will be a tough game for us. »

Southgate has warned he expects a different level of opposition from the Americans after England enjoyed a relatively easy opener against Iran.

“I think tomorrow’s game will be very different from the first game,” added Southgate. “They are a team that presses the ball very well and have, with respect, probably a level of player that has more experience in the top European leagues.

“As for tomorrow’s game, it will not be the pattern of the previous one.”
