Erdogan says Russia has failed to fulfill its obligations to Syria

Russia committed in 2019 to purge Kobane of terrorists, but failed to do so, so Turkey will go it alone.

According to Ukrinform with reference to CNN TurkTurkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan told reporters after a visit to Qatar.

“This time, the target was two main regions: one is Northern Iraq, the other is Northern Syria. We have taken steps and will continue to take steps towards these regions. We also reached an agreement with the Russians in Sochi in 2019. They were responsible for clearing terrorists from the area (Kobani – ed.). Unfortunately, despite the fact that we reminded them many times, they didn’t do it, they can’t,” Erdogan said.

According to him, Turkey has taken up this case itself.

“We said that we would not stand aside, and that we would take steps against the terrorists there if they (the Russians – ed.) could not do it themselves. As part of this, yesterday we neutralized 12 targets against terrorists stationed in Kobani by hitting them,” the Turkish president said.

As Ukrinform reported, Turkish authorities announced on Sunday evening the launch of the Claw-Sword operation in northern Syria and Iraq, targeting the outlawed PKK and Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG).

The operation took place a week after the explosion in Istanbul on November 13, which killed six people and injured 81 others. Turkey believes it was a terrorist attack, involving both said Kurdish associations. It turns out that the instructions for the explosion came from Kobane.
