EU foreign ministers meet urgently with ‘Russia’ agenda

The foreign ministers of the European Union (EU) countries will hold an emergency meeting in New York after Russia’s mobilization decision, which includes the conscription of 300,000 reservists, and the referendum by the separatists in Ukraine.

EU High Representative for Foreign Relations and Security Policy Josep Borrell called the ministers in New York for an extraordinary and special meeting for the UN General Assembly.

Borrell told reporters that they aimed to adopt a common line at the meeting.

“We will not bow down, we will continue to fully support the defense of Ukraine’s sovereignty and democracy.” Borrell said, adding that they want this war to stop immediately before greater challenges and threats arise.

Stating that Russian President Vladimir Putin threatened to use nuclear weapons in his mobilization statement, Borrell said, “This kind of threat is unacceptable. Threatening with nuclear weapons is a real danger for the whole world. The international community should show its reaction in the face of this threat.” said.

Evaluating Putin’s mobilization announcement as “panic and desperation”, Borrell said that Russia tried to subdue Ukraine but could not succeed.

“Ministers must discuss this threat, reiterate continued support for Ukraine, and warn the international community about the unacceptable situation that Putin has put us all in,” Borrell said. “It is clear that Russia wants to destroy Ukraine.”

The European Union (EU) has started preparations for new sanctions against Russia.

According to the news of the Politico website, the EU Commission is working on the content of the new sanctions package against Russia.

The Commission will present its new sanctions package proposal to the EU countries in a few days.

Member states will discuss new restrictive measures such as imposing a ceiling on Russian oil, adding more Russian officials to the sanctions list, banning the purchase of diamonds and luxury products from Russia.
