EU ministers agree to extend new sanctions against Russia

EU foreign ministers agreed to prepare new sanctions against Russia and increase arms supplies to Ukraine.

Josep Borrell, the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Policy, said Putin’s statement, which included steps to annex Ukrainian territories and threaten to use nuclear weapons to defend Russia, showed panic and despair.

“It is clear that Putin is trying to destroy Ukraine,” Borrell told reporters after the ministerial meeting.

After a briefing by Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba, ministers agreed to instruct their teams preparing the eighth package of sanctionsthat will target “more relevant sectors of the Russian economy and continue to target those responsible for Ukraine’s war of aggression,” Borrell said.

EU ministers will hold their next official meeting in mid-October, when the sanctions package can be formalized.

They also agreed to increase arms supplies to Ukraine. Borrell declined to give further details about the type. sanctions or military support, but said he thought there would be “unanimous” support for the new measures within the bloc.

In an interview with Reuters, Estonian Foreign Minister Urmas Reinsalu said Putin was trying to scare and divide the West, but his final comments were “a groundbreaking moment”.

Wednesday’s meeting should emphasize unity, act swiftly with the new sanctions package and use the European Peace Fund financing mechanism to increase arms supplies to Ukraine, he said.

“We must also declare that we take legal responsibility. The Fuhrers in the Kremlin should not assume that their responsibility for the genocide war should be taken lightly,” he said.

Remember: the foreign ministers of 27 countries of the bloc are in New York at the annual meeting of world leaders at the UN.
