Exmo said the authors refuse to censor their texts, as required by the “drug propaganda” law.

Some copyright holders refuse to make changes to books to make them compliant with the requirements of the ADA. This was announced by the head of the Eksmo publishing house, Evgeny Kabaev, at a press conference.

“We are negotiating with them,” Kabaev said. “We will negotiate face to face, and try to convince them to either paint or repair it. There are many options.”

The publisher will try to find a compromise with the copyright holders. However, the Exmo president said: “If the book violates the law, it should not be published.”

On March 1, 2026, amendments to the Law “On the Prohibition of Drug Propaganda” entered into force in Russia, which prohibits mention of drugs in the media, books, music and films without special signs. This mark must accompany all works published in Russia after August 1, 1990.

The Russian authorities have developed a special program for publishing houses that censors books based on artificial intelligence. Earlier, the General Director of “Exmo” said that the neural network, which checks the compliance of books with new requirements, considered the name of the writer Denis Dragonsky “drug propaganda.” The functioning of the neural network “must be checked and cleaned manually,” he said.
