Harry Brook and Ben Duckett piled on a superb centenary position as England posted a formidable 221 for three in the third Twenty20 against Pakistan.

The duo had just nine caps between them at the start of the day but looked like seasoned campaigners as they sent the attack home to all parts of Karachi’s National Stadium.

Brook scored five sixes and eight fours as he took 81 steps on just 35 balls, while Duckett’s unbeaten 70 of 42 were littered with the instinctive sweeps around which he built his reputation.

Having met in the ninth over the fourth-wicket pair, they hit 139 unanswered to put their side on pole position.

Debutant Will Jacks immediately installed himself at the top of England’s order after being chosen ahead of Alex Hales, clearing the first ball and carrying Mohammad Hasnain to the edge of the mid-wicket before the end of the first over.

Phil Salt left early, but Jacks threw another in the middle of the wicket, made a drive just past the bowler and beat Shahnawaz Dahani to cover.

His strike took England to 57 for one late in the power play, but leg spinner Usman Qadir landed a quick double when Dawid Malan (14) and Jacks (40 from 22) both picked the sweeper .

Duckett had already used three limits when Brook joined him at age 82 for three and they managed brilliantly. Brook crushed Qadir for two four-ball sixes, passing in the middle of the second even as the bowler tried to hook him outside the stump.

While relying on power and timing, Duckett relied on his reputation as an incorrigible sweeper and string together a series of fours that were both predictable but impossible to prevent.

Brook won the run at 50 with a big pass from Dahani, netting two accurate shots behind the point either side of another big shot to the middle of the wicket. He had taken only 24 bullets to reach the marker, six faster than Duckett, who joined him moments later.

They scored 43 goals from the last three overs in increasingly confident fashion, putting the finishing touches to a memorable partnership.
