Matt Doherty is ready to “go through a wall” for Tottenham manager Antonio Conte as he tries to force his way back into the squad.

The 30-year-old winger met with the Republic of Ireland this week in hopes of playing his part in the Nations League games against Scotland and Armenia to prove to the Italian he has overcome the knee injury that limited him to just seven minutes. club action since April.

Doherty had established himself as a starter in Conte’s squad last season before a torn medial collateral ligament ended his campaign, but he has seen enough of the new manager to be excited about what he brings to the club.

He said: “He changed the whole mindset of the whole club. He made us feel like winners. We know he’s obviously won a lot in the past and we’re trying to do that.

“We have meetings, we have conversations where later you feel motivated. I remember when he first walked in, we had a meeting and afterward, you were ready to walk through a wall for him.

“Look, he’s one of the best managers there ever was, so whatever he says, we listen to him.”

The former Italy coach Conte, who counts Juventus, Chelsea and Inter Milan among his former employers, brings a passion and excitement to the job that is evident on the sidelines, and Doherty admits he is little different from the spotlight.

We love having him as our manager and we are very lucky that he is the manager of the club.

He said: “He’s probably not that lively in training camp, but he’s still pretty lively. He has a lot of passion for what he does and that comes back to us in the way we are playing and the way we push.

“We love having him as our manager and we are very lucky that he is the manager of the club.”

Doherty has landed in Dublin with just two brief replacements to his name so far this season and with Conte hoping fellow Irishman Stephen Kenny can use him much more widely.

The defender said: “That’s exactly what he said, he wants me to go out and try to make two games. He said at his press conference that I would be available after the international break for the selection.”

He added with a smile, “That’s the plan – if Stephen obeys it.”

Doherty’s mission this week is not just to get valuable minutes, but to help Ireland end a League of Nations campaign that started with defeats to Armenia and Ukraine on a positive note following June’s win over Scotland and an honorable draw. in return with the Ukrainians as they prepare for the Euro 2024 qualifying campaign.

He said: “Many of us are at that age where there may not be many opportunities to get back into serious competition. Some of us never were, including me.

“We are very focused. We have a definite goal that we want to achieve. I think we are capable.”
