Health Care Service Corporation (HCSC), the largest customer owned-health insurer in the United States, has appointed a new Chief Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) officer. Claudia (Raquel) Daniels has more than 20 years’ experience developing and integrating DEI principles and best practices into Fortune 500 companies, most recently as director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion at Southwest Airlines.

Daniels will lead implementation of HCSC’s long-term vision and goals for DEI both internally and externally, in alignment with the company’s mission, values, and business strategy.

“I am thrilled to join an organization that has committed to DEI in both word and deed,” said Daniels. “Over my career, it has been my mission to create spaces of opportunity, equity, belonging and inclusion where all people can thrive. I am looking forward to partnering with all of HCSC’s stakeholders – employees, members, communities and customers – to nurture meaningful and inclusive experiences.”

“We are so pleased to welcome Raquel, whose ideas and experience will help deepen our culture of DEI,” said Manika Turnbull, PhD, Senior Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer at HCSC. “It is a top priority that all our employees continue to feel valued and treated with respect and that the products, policies and programs we offer are equitable across our diverse members and communities.”

HCSC has received numerous awards highlighting its commitment to DEI, including 2022 Forbes Best Employers for Diversity and 2022 Military Friendly Employer.

The company’s annual Diversity, Equity and Inclusion profile highlights the company’s diverse profile and yearly accomplishments.

  • In 2021, nearly 45% of the company’s approximately 24,000 employees were people of color: 18% African American; 13% Latino; 9% Asian American; 2% two or more races and 1% Native American. Nearly 37% of HCSC’s management team and 33% of Directors, Executives and Vice Presidents are people of color. 73% of employees identify as women, including 65% of managers.
  • More than 6,000 HCSC employees belong to nine different Business Resource Group communities, which align employees with common interests or backgrounds.
  • An annual calendar distributed for 27 years features the artwork by the children of HCSC employees illustrating their views on diversity and inclusion.
