Philadelphia 76ers third-year big man Paul Reed had a chance to shine against the Brooklyn Nets on Tuesday with Sixers superstar center Joel Embiid out injured.

Reed was one of five Philadelphia players to score 16 or more points as the shorthanded Sixers earned a surprising 115-106 win over Brooklyn. Reed finished with 19 points, 10 rebounds, three steals and two blocks on 7 for 9 (77.8%) shooting in 31 minutes off the bench.

Paul Reed previously only averaged 8.0 minutes per game, however, he has displayed his high potential in the NBA G League in the past. On that note, here’s how he fared during his time in the G League.

After being drafted 58th by the Sixers in 2020, Paul Reed signed a two-way contract with Philadelphia. This meant he would split time between the Sixers and their G League affiliate, the Delaware Blue Coats.

In his first season with the Blue Coats, Reed had a dominant season. He averaged 22.3 points, 11.8 rebounds, 2.3 assists, 1.9 steals and 1.8 blocks per game on 58.8 percent shooting in 15 games. Those numbers helped him win the 2020-21 G League Most Valuable Player and Rookie of the Year awards.

In doing so, Reed became the first Delaware player to win either award. Reed also helped lead the Blue Coats to the playoffs for the first time in franchise history.

Reed’s impressive play also led to the Sixers converting his two-way deal to a standard NBA contract on March 26, 2021. Sixers president Daryl Morey praised Reed’s potential at the time.

“Paul has proven himself at every level and I expect the NBA to be next,” Morey said.

“The G League MVP almost always goes to veteran players with experience as a professional. The fact that he wins in his rookie season shows the incredible NBA potential he has,” Morey continued.

Reed also played in nine games for the Delaware Blue Coats last season. Reed averaged 22.3 points, 13.6 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 1.4 steals and 1.8 blocks per game on 57.3 percent shooting. Overall, Reed’s elite performances in the G League made it clear he deserved a real shot in the NBA.

As for his NBA career, Paul Reed has career stats of 3.0 points, 2.5 rebounds, 0.8 steals and 0.4 blocks per game on 54.3% shooting. He played just 7.9 minutes per game in 78 games over three seasons.

This season, Reed is averaging 2.1 points, 2.8 rebounds, 1.1 steals and 0.5 blocks per game while shooting 48.0 percent. He did it in just 9.6 minutes per game over 14 games.

It remains to be seen if Paul Reed’s recent breakthrough game against the Brooklyn Nets will earn him a bigger role in the future.
