More than thirty years after the collapse of the Soviet Union, most Russians regret it. This was reported by the press service of the All-Russian Center for the Study of Public Opinion (VTsIOM).
According to a recent study, 57% of citizens surveyed regretted the end of the Soviet Union. Moreover, more than half of the participants (57%) are convinced that the collapse could have been prevented.
Attitudes toward the events of 1991 vary greatly by age. The generation that witnessed the height of its glory faces the fate of the Soviet Union more acutely. Thus, 79% of people who belong to the “thaw generation” regret the breakup.
Among representatives of the young “digital” generation, this figure is noticeably lower – only 14 percent. If a similar referendum on preserving the Soviet Union were held today, 61% of Russians would vote in favor of restoring the Soviet Union.
Among those who support the Soviet Union, nostalgic motives prevail. About 30% believe that it was “a great country in which the friendship and unity of its people prevailed,” and 26% estimated the Soviet period in terms of “equality, stability, and security.”
Those who vote against heritage preservation point to the irreversibility of historical processes: 24% believe that “times have changed,” and 21% insist on the right of each republic to independent existence.
