‘Space Jam: A New Legacy’ Preview

“Space Jam: A New Legacy” is a sequel to the 1996 comedy starring Michael Jordan. This follow-up film stars LeBron James. In the film, James “goes on an epic adventure alongside the timeless Tune Bugs Bunny and the Tune Squad in this animated/live-action event,” according to the HBO Max press release.

It continues:

This transformational journey is a manic mashup of two worlds that reveals just how far some parents will go to connect with their kids.

NBA champ LeBron James and his son Dom are trapped in digital space by a rogue A.I. To get them home, LeBron must lead Bugs Bunny and the whole gang of undisciplined Looney Tunes to victory over the A.I.’s team of digitized NBA and WNBA stars. It’s Tunes versus Goons in a high-stakes challenge that shines a light on the power of being yourself.

“Space Jam: A New Legacy” co-stars Don Cheadle, Khris Davis, Sonequa Martin-Green, Cedric Joe, Jeff Bergman, Eric Bauza, and Zendaya.

In an interview with “Entertainment Weekly,” James said that the original “Space Jam” was “definitely a big part of [his] childhood.”

“There were a lot of films for me, but ‘Space Jam’ was definitely up there. Just growing up and loving the NBA, and obviously loving Michael Jordan, and loving the Looney Tunes, it was an automatic and a very organic blend between the two worlds,” said James. “And it was fun to see what MJ and Bugs and Taz and all those great toons were able to go through in that first movie. It was pretty cool, man, as a kid, wanting to see inspiration from movies and from people that you look up to, and people that you watch on a day-to-day basis.”

James was originally approached about the film 15 years ago, but he said that at that point in his career, he wasn’t ready for something this high-profile.

“At that point in time, I didn’t think I was ready to do anything of that magnitude,” said James. “I wanted to continue to focus on my game, dedicate myself to the offseason, and give to the game as much as I could. I felt like I owed it to myself, to the game. When it was brought back, the timing was right for us, and we were able to dive into it. And now we’re months away from the world actually seeing what we were able to create.”

“Space Jam: A New Legacy” drops Friday, July 16 on HBO Max.

Olympics 3×3 Basketball Preview

The Olympics are set to put a new spin on a classic sport as 3X3 basketball takes center stage in Tokyo. Here’s how the Olympics describes the sport on its official site.

“Exciting, urban and innovative, 3×3 is inspired by several forms of streetball played worldwide, and is considered the world’s number one urban team sport. FIBA has developed 3×3 as the second basketball discipline to attract a new audience and provide more opportunities for its member associations and players worldwide.”

There will be eight men’s teams and eight women’s teams in Tokyo, although only the US women qualified. A total of 64 athletes will compete for the gold from July 24-28. Here are some of the more unique rules, courtesy of FIBA:

  • 1 basket on 1 half-court
  • 2 teams of 3 players and up to 1 substitute per team
  • 12-seconds shot-clock
  • 1st team to reach 21 points or best after 10 minutes win

The US women’s team is made up of Las Vegas Aces guard Kelsey Plum, Chicago Sky center Stefanie Dolson and Dallas Wings guard Allisha Gray and Aces guard Jackie Young.

“I would describe it as a 400- or 800-[meter sprint],” Plum says. “It’s just pretty much go, go, go, as hard as you can.”

Katie Lou Samuelson was a late scratch for the American squad, having to sit out due to COVID-19 health and safety protocols.

“Competing in the Olympics has been a dream of mine since I was a little girl and I hope someday soon, I can comeback to realize that dream,” Samuelson wrote in a statement. “I wish nothing but the best to my USAB teammates as they go out there and crush it. I’ll be cheering you on every step of the way.”

Samuelson was an instrumental part of qualifying and the US will have to find a way to overcome her absence.

“Our hearts are broken for Lou. We thank her for her endless commitment to building up USA Basketball 3×3 & we will miss her dearly in Tokyo,” USA Basketball tweeted this week.

Here are the odds for the women’s tournament.

Olympics Beach Volleyball Preview

The United States women took home the bronze in beach volleyball at 2016 Games in Rio, while the Americans failed to medal on the men’s side. After over a decade of dominance from popular duo Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh Jennings, who won Olympic gold in 2004, 2008, and 2012, things will be looking quite different for the U.S. this time.

April Ross, who teamed with Walsh Jennings to win the bronze in 2016, is now pairing with Alix Klineman in the hopes of attaining gold.

“It’s the Olympics, and you want that party atmosphere,” Ross said. “Japanese fans are awesome, so if those are the fans we’re going to have, I think it’s going to be a great atmosphere.”

“I really want people to see and focus on is how tough the sport is, and how athletic the players are,” Ross added. “That’s still going to be showcased. Hopefully, we reach a lot of people, and for them there’s no distractions.”

A refresher on beach volleyball rules: The men’s and women’s sides will each have 24 teams that are then split into six pools of four. The top two pairs from each group along with four wild cards will advance to the single-elimination Round of 16. Matches consist of three sets each; teams play up to 21 points in the first two sets and up to 15 in the third. Teams can only win a match when sets are won by at least two points.

Here’s a look at the schedule for both men’s and women’s beach volleyball, as well as a glimpse of the competitors:

Schedule of Events: July 23-24: Men’s and women’s pool games; Aug 4-5: Men’s and women’s semifinals; Aug 5-6: Men’s and women’s bronze- and gold-medal games
