England lead Group B with 3 points, while the Americans have 1.

“We are very pleased to start the tournament in this way,” said England manager Gareth Southgate after the victory, “and very satisfied with our game in attack. We know Iran usually has a hard time scoring goals, so credit goes to that. [the players’] movement, quality of passage, quality of completion.

There’s one thing to watch out for: English captain Harry Kane did an ankle scan after the win, but Southgate thinks he’ll be good to go against the Americans.

“I think Harry is fine. It looked like a bad tackle, but he kept playing. We removed it because we felt there was a point in the game where we could do it.”

On the other hand, the United States managed to draw 1–1 with Wales in the first leg. Tim Weah scored the only goal for the American team thanks to a beautiful pass from striker Christian Pulisic, but the US failed to capitalize on numerous scoring opportunities in the second half.
