Tulane vs. Cincinnati Preview

The winners of this game are eligible to host the American Athletic Conference regular season championship on December 3rd.

However, there is a huge question mark hanging over this, as Cincinnati is still unsure who will get the start as quarterback: Ben Bryant or Evan Prather. Bryant injured his leg in the first half last week in the team’s 23-3 victory over Temple, so Tulane has been preparing all week to face any QB.

Bryant completed 9 of 18 passes for 130 yards and a touchdown before falling down with a foot injury. The Prater was solid relief, going 12-17 for 127 yards.

“I don’t know if there will be many [practice] representatives this week for Ben,” Bearcats head coach Luke Fickell said of the QB situation. “But he played ball a lot and if we get to the situation during the game and he can do it, then we can move in that direction.”

“It’s a little different,” Tulane trainer Willy Fritz said via Nola.com. “We’ll see what happens when they get out of there. I had games in which I thought that the guy was not playing, but he was playing. The same on the other side. But (Bryant and Prather) are a little different in terms of what they do and what their composition is at quarterback.”

The Green Wave defeated SMU 59-24 last weekend. Tulane, running back Taija Spears, gained 121 yards and touched down twice on the ground, averaging 9.3 yards per carry. Quarterback Michael Pratt went 9-14 for 141 yards and three passing touchdowns, and added 70 rushing yards and three ground points in the win.

In addition to hosting the AAC title game, the winner will have a better chance of making it into the New Year’s Six bowl, so there’s a lot at stake. The Green Wave are 4-0 away this season, and the Bearcats are currently on a 32-game winning streak at Nippert Stadium, so something needs to be conceded in this game.

Both teams allow 19 points per game on defense, so it’s about even. “Obviously this week is huge,” Fickell said. “This is for everything and for all balloons. This is the beginning of the championship. This is what we are preparing for. This is what we represent. This is the only target we don’t talk about that we have when we start camp. And it’s graduation day.
