Former Pakistan captain Salman Butt has expressed his displeasure at India’s decision to give Bhuvneshwar Kumar the 19th innings of the Australian innings in the first T20I on Tuesday September 20.
Despite Kumar’s failure to cut runs in the 19th chase at the 2022 Asian Cup, the Men in Blue persisted with him to get the job done in the series opener against the Australians. The fast pitcher dropped 16 runs in the overs, bringing the equation down to two runs over the last six balls.
Speaking on his YouTube channel after India’s loss to Australia, Butt sarcastically commented:
“I don’t know if anyone promised Bhuvneshwar Kumar he would overthrow the 19th. I don’t understand how you can bring Bhuvneshwar into the attack for key overs while defending a target. I don’t think this tactic is worth it because it has neither rhythm nor reverse swing.”
Matthew Wade was Australia’s hero as his unbeaten 45-point shot helped the visitors to an easy victory with four balls to spare. Making another sarcastic comment on how Indian bowlers made Wade’s job easier at Mohali, Butt added:
“Everyone is praising Matthew Wade. Yeah he played well but if he gets a Genie he looks like it gives me a slower one on the leg side. Indian bowlers have it done. What he wanted, India gave him.”
“They can’t bet on the bowlers they’re betting on right now” – Salman Butt names 3 bowlers who can replace Bhuvneshwar Kumar
Salman Butt felt India should be looking for players who can replace Bhuvneshwar Kumar and even provide more pace in the dead than Harshal Patel.
He listed the names of Mohammed Siraj, Umran Malik and Umesh Yadav as likely replacement options and added:
“India have Siraj, Umran Malik. Even Umesh Yadav played well in the first T20I. They can’t bet on the bowlers they are betting on right now.”
It remains to be seen whether India will make any changes to his penalty in the second game against Australia on Friday, September 23, in Nagpur.
