On March 17, the theater and film director and artistic director of the Trubnaya Theater Dmitry Astrakhan celebrates his birthday. The correspondent of the Moscow Evening Newspaper spoke with the birthday boy.
– Dmitry Khananovich, how do you plan to spend the day?
-I believe that the best birthday gift you can give yourself, or that fate can give you, is a job. I loved it when my birthday was celebrated on set or during rehearsal. Today I will hold it at the Trubnaya Theater – in the evening the second premiere of the film “Yellow Dwarf” will take place. So I will be there and meet my friends in the evening.
– Can you tell us more about the new performance?
— This is a production based on the play by Oleg Danilov. In 2001, I made a film based on it. Alexander Abdulov and Elena Proklova played in the film. Now I decided to return to this drama and present it in different dialects. This is a family story about what parents want to do for their children.
– Why did you decide to return to the play now?
– You know, birthdays pass, we get older, our outlook on life changes, and we begin to look at some events from a different angle. This story is still alive to this day, and besides, there are wonderful and interesting roles from an acting point of view.
– When you choose artists for films and shows, what do you focus on?
— To be honest, professionalism remains the main criterion for me. If the actor is suitable for the role and has talent, other criteria are not very important to me. 90% of the success of a movie or play depends on a good script and the right actors.
-What else are you working on now?
— At the Trubnaya Theater, we begin rehearsals for Schiller’s tragedy “Cunning and Love,” the premiere of which is scheduled for September. I have planned a fantasy film for the cinema, but I don’t want to reveal the details yet. I can only say that work will start in the summer.
— On our birthday, we’re still summarizing some mediocre results. What will you celebrate today?
“I just think about how much has not been done yet – I have not read, I have not shown, I have not watched… But our theater is very important to me now – in four years under my leadership we have managed to triple ticket sales, our halls are full. The theater on Trubnaya has found its own identity – we talk about serious things in a light form, our language is recognizable. And this is very valuable to me.
