In response to Trump’s ultimatum, Iran announced that it is ready to close the Strait of Hormuz and completely destroy all American economic interests in the region.
Trump called on Iran to open the Strait of Hormuz within 48 hours, threatening otherwise to destroy Iranian power plants, “starting with the largest.”
The Iranian Revolutionary Guard Command said in a statement in response that if the American threats are implemented, Iran will immediately take the following measures:
- The Strait of Hormuz will be completely closed and will only reopen after the destroyed power plants are rebuilt.
- All Israeli power plants, as well as energy, information and communications infrastructure, will be vulnerable to large-scale attacks.
- All similar companies with American shareholders in the region will be completely destroyed.
- Power plants in countries in the region that host US bases would be a legitimate target.
The Strait of Hormuz, through which up to a fifth of all maritime oil exports previously passed, has been closed by Iran since the beginning of the new war in the Middle East. The loss of this volume has already led to a sharp rise in oil prices and forced the International Energy Agency to “uncover” the reserves, releasing 400 million barrels to the market.
