Former Pakistani cricketer Danish Kaneria believes Indian team skipper Rohit Sharma should step down in the batting order in the T20Is, given his recent dismal performance in the format. Rohit recorded a failure in the opener of the T20I series against Australia, managing just 11 out of nine deliveries.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Kaneria mentioned that Sharma struggles to score big runs regularly. He suggested that the Men in Blue ask Virat Kohli to open in T20I, as he did well while beating at the top of the order.
Kaneria felt that either Rohit Sharma or KL Rahul should cede their top spot to the former captain. He highlighted Kohli’s admirable performance in the 2022 Asian Cup and supported him to succeed in India’s upcoming matches as well.
“Rohit Sharma doesn’t score enough points. We also saw that in the Asian Cup. He starts but wasn’t able to convert them into big shots. He should consider dropping to the No 3 and Virat Kohli could open Or India could ask KL Rahul to be No 3 with Virat and Rohit playing as openers.
Rohit Sharma has collected 133 carries in four Asian Cup matches, including 72 in the Super 4 match against Sri Lanka alone. He had an impressive strike rate of 151.3.
Virat Kohli had taken the opening spot for India’s last game in the Asian Cup against Afghanistan as Rohit was injured. He capitalized on the opportunity by smashing his 71st international cent.
‘There was no need for him to play that shot’ – Dane Kaneria on Virat Kohli’s dismissal against Australia
Virat Kohli was sent off for two points in India’s opener against Australia on Tuesday September 20 at Mohali. The seasoned campaigner perished trying to play an attacking shot on midfield.
Kaneria suggested that Kohli should have taken more time to prepare before attempting such moves. He felt that the 33-year-old should have been a bit more patient in the encounter, given the nature of the pitch.
“Virat Kohli received a huge ovation from the crowd when he came out at bat. However, he only managed to score two runs. There was no need for him to play that shot and there was no no requirement for that move at this stage of the game. He should have looked to spend more time in the slot before playing his moves. It was a new wicket and he had to adapt first.
The visitors picked up a stunning four-wicket win in the clash to lead 1-0 in the three-game series. The two cricketing giants will next be seen in action on Friday, September 23, when they lock the horns in the rubber’s second game.
The upcoming contest will be a must play for Rohit Sharma and Co. as they look to stay afloat on the show.
