US Special Presidential Envoy Steve Witkoff and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi have resumed direct communications in recent days, Axios reported on March 16, citing sources.
They said that Araqchi sent text messages to Witkoff calling for an end to the American and Israeli war on Iran.
Previously published by Drop Site News I mentionedAccording to Iranian sources, Witkoff was the one who sent the messages to Aragchi, and the head of the Iranian Foreign Ministry ignored them.
Meanwhile, a US official told Axios that it was Araghchi who was trying to establish contact, but the United States, he said, “does not negotiate” with Iran.
It is unclear how important the messages between Aragchi and Witkoff are, but these are the first known direct communications between Iran and the United States since the beginning of the war that has been ongoing for more than two weeks.
US President Donald Trump said on March 16 that Iran had been in contact with the United States, but it was not clear whether the Iranian officials involved were authorized to negotiate the agreement. “We have no idea who they are,” Trump told reporters. He added that he is not against negotiations with the Iranians “because sometimes good things come out of them.”
