Jordan Henderson said his friends and family were shocked by the troubles ahead of the Euro 2020 final and the 2022 Champions League final and his father claimed after the scenes in Paris in May that he would not no longer wanted to attend such occasions.

Liverpool captain’s England team-mate Eric Dier has revealed his family are not attending away games due to abuse, which he called a “huge problem” for the game.

Henderson agrees, citing his personal experiences. His wife, Rebecca, and two young daughters struggled to get into Wembley and get away from the mess ahead of the Euro 2020 final against Italy.

And while Liverpool fans were blameless for problems ahead of the Champions League final when they struggled to get into the ground some were sprayed with tear gas by French police and the kick shipment was delayed, it was another unpleasant experience for Henderson’s family which is likely to deter him from going to such games in the future.

Henderson’s father Brian provided one of the most memorable images after Liverpool won the 2019 Champions League final when he hugged his son.

But as he reflected on the 2022 final, the midfielder said: “My dad said after the Champions League final it was over. Some of my family ended up there. , which wasn’t ideal. A lot of families of players, I think that’s everyone, got caught outside the stadium. I think it was pretty awful. When I spoke to some of my friends, my family and my father, it was pretty bad.

“In Paris, in the final, I think if the fans weren’t respectful there could have been a lot more problems, so I think the fans were amazing.

“It was the authorities and the people around the stadium who weren’t and causing problems. But I guess as a fan, if you go to the game and you don’t feel comfortable and feel threatened by any situation, you won’t want to go back. And it’s as simple as that, really.

“My family and friends have had a few experiences over the past two years that really shocked them and probably put them off attending future games.

“I hope that will change in the near future as the tournament approaches. But when you see scenes like the Euro final and the Champions League final, they don’t really want to recover. in this situation.

England fans caused some of the trouble ahead of the Euro 2020 final and, while Henderson was shielded from it, he later discovered his family were struggling to get to safety.

He explained: “My wife and children had to try to get through a side door which they didn’t want to let in at first and they were trapped.

“She was trying to keep the kids away from everything that was going on and eventually I think after about 15 or 20 minutes someone recognized that she was my wife and she was lucky because they knew that it was me, they let them in quickly.

“But if that person doesn’t have [know her], that could have been a problem. My dad’s been a bit involved I think some of the dads of players like Harry Maguire have been badly hurt and so when people see that and when people are in that situation and they feel threatened or that something do not go. They were fine, but they were lucky.

“So I think we all know it wasn’t great, it was a bad experience for a lot of people that final. Then we have Paris, which is probably even worse. So I don’t blame anyone who doesn’t want not put myself in this situation and to be fair there are two totally different reasons, but again if it was me I wouldn’t want to put myself in this situation.
