Guadalajara (Mexico), September 23 (EFE). – This Friday, Argentinean Diego Cocca announced that he will step down as coach of the two-time Atlas champion at the end of the Mexican football tournament Apertura 2022, and ruled out rumors of his connection with the new technical director of Sporting de Gijon.

“There will always be talk of opportunities, especially when a manager successfully leaves a place, but (Sporting) is not what I think about, it is not what drives me at the moment. What drives me is to get close to this team well and make it clear to the people of Atlas that I am leaving so that the institution can continue to grow and not have another project,” the 50-year-old strategist explained.

The Mexican press had reported prior to Cocchi’s announcement that the Argentine would leave Atlas to take charge of Sporting de Gijón; Both shots belong to the Mexican group Orlegi, led by businessman Alejandro Irarragorri.

“We don’t have any other job because we’re not interested in thinking about anything other than Atlas. Their time will come, hopefully they will give us the vacation we need because it will be good for us, after which we will continue to work and all projects that will continue to grow will be appreciated; Now is not the time to think about it,” Kokka added.

Last December, the CTO weathered more than 70 years of Atlas drought without winning a single championship title, and last May he gave Rohinegro his first two championships in addition to the Champion of Champions trophy.

However, in this Apertura 2022, he has the Guadalajara team penultimate in the table a day after the end of the regular stage, with no ambition to challenge for the title.

Kokka assured that his decision to complete his cycle at Atlas next Saturday, October 1, the last day of the regular season, when his team hosts Necaxa at their stadium, was for the good of the institution.

“I made a bold decision. The easiest thing would be to stay and make the board responsible for expelling the coach, the two-time champion, which would be unpleasant for me and for them. That’s why we should enjoy this moment, part of the transformation we’ve made is not to see Atlas as a synonym for bad news, but rather as a synonym for happiness like the one we’ll experience on Saturday.”
