Manchester United are preparing to face Manchester City when the Premier League resumes in early October. Erik ten Hag’s men have won their last four league games but will face a tough test against the defending champions.
Meanwhile, renowned transfer expert Fabrizio Romano believes Cristiano Ronaldo would have been a great option for Bayern Munich this summer. Elsewhere, Atletico Madrid are interested in Marcus Rashford.
On that note, here’s a rundown of Manchester United’s top transfer stories as of September 20, 2022:
Cristiano Ronaldo would have been a great option for Bayern Munich, says Fabrizio Romano
Fabrizio Romano believes Bayern Munich have missed a trick by passing up the opportunity to sign Cristiano Ronaldo this summer.
The Portuguese was desperate to leave Manchester United before the end of the window and offered his services to clubs across Europe. Bayern Munich had the option of taking him to the Allianz Arena but opted against investing in the 37-year-old.
However, now it seems the decision has come back to haunt them. After allowing Robert Lewandowski a move to Barcelona in the summer, the Bavarians have struggled to win games this season. They are fifth in the Bundesliga table with three wins from their first seven games, and the pressure is mounting on manager Julian Nagelsmann.
In his column for Caught Offside, Romano said there are no plans to replace Nagelsmann yet. However, the Italian said Bayern miss Lewandowski.
“Bayern is very clear about its position – it protects Nagelsmann with the whole board, and it denies all rumors about other managers. At the moment this does not change. It is normal that a player like Robert Lewandowski is missed by any club,” Romano wrote.
Romano added that Ronaldo would have been a great replacement for the Polish striker.
“I think Cristiano Ronaldo was a great option for them to replace their top scorer, but I understand their traditional transfer policy is different,” Romano wrote.
The Portuguese has one goal in eight games in all competitions for the Red Devils this season.
Atlético Madrid interested in Marcus Rashford
Atletico Madrid are interested in Marcus Rashford, according to Fichajes via Caught Offside.
The England striker has three goals and three assists in six games in all competitions this season for Manchester United. He is in the final year of his contract, although the Red Devils have the option of a further year. The player was linked with a move from Old Trafford in the summer, but a move never materialised.
Los Rojiblancos are monitoring Rashford’s situation with interest. The La Liga giants have taken note of his resurgence under Erik ten Hag and believe he could be a good addition to their squad. However, taking him away from his boyhood club wouldn’t be a walk in the park.
Ex-Manchester United manager wasn’t a candidate for Brighton, says Fabrizio Romano
Fabrizio Romano has said former Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is not a candidate for the managerial job at Brighton & Hove Albion.
The Seagulls recently named Roberto de Zerbi as successor to Graham Potter, who joined Chelsea earlier this month. Solskjaer is rumored to be in contention for the hot seat at the Amex Stadium.
However, in his column for Caught Offside, Romano said De Zerbi was Brighton’s only man.
“It’s inevitable that many managers will be job-bound when an opening becomes available, but I’m unconvinced by recent rumors that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is one of the candidates for Brighton. I’ve been told that the only man Brighton wanted was Roberto de Zerbi, the real priority,” Romano wrote.
The Italian added that Solskjaer needs a clear, long-term plan to return to management.
“I have no information on Solskjaer and I’m speaking with Brighton. The situation is really calm around Ole at the moment. I’m sure he would be a good choice for many Premier League clubs, but he needs of a clear, long-term project,” said Romano.
Solskjaer parted ways with the Red Devils last year.
