Michael Chandler has explained why he chooses to adopt a wild fighting style in his MMA fights. Chandler was constantly criticized for not using his incredible technical prowess to fight safely and instead engaging in all-out brawls.

Speaking to ESPN MMA’s Brett Okamoto, Chandler justified his dangerous fighting style. Breaking down why he fights this way, “Iron” said:

“Just as punches, kicks, knees, elbows, submissions and grappling are techniques in the sport of mixed martial arts; pressure too, presence too, squeezing a guy and playing with his spirit and try to break his spirit.”

Additionally, the former Bellator lightweight champion and current UFC lightweight contender noted that his fighting style is “extremely entertaining.” Michael Chandler added that it has also helped him become “probably the most exciting guy in sports” and “must have TV”.

Okamoto chimed in and indicated that lately Chandler has become a fighter whose fans love to watch the fights whether he wins or loses. When asked if he was okay with being labeled as such, “Iron” replied:

“It’s a label I’m here for, man. Like I said, ‘I haven’t been here long. I’m here for a good while.’ And I’m actually allergic to – it’s not even possible for me to have a boring fight Even if I go in there and fight at 50% of the pace I normally fight, I’m gonna go in there and stay the hottest guy on the map.”

Additionally, Chandler has hinted that his offense is an important part of his defense. He felt that easing the pressure would leave him vulnerable to his opponent’s attack. This is the reason why he always uses a high octane and aggressive game plan in his fights.

Henry Cejudo hinted that Michael Chandler is a highly skilled fighter and has an impressive MMA record. That said, he thinks Chandler’s high-risk fighting style is hurting him inside the octagon. ‘Triple C’ explained:

“I think if Michael Chandler really became more of a competitor, he’d be a lot more dangerous. If he was my friend, I’d be like, ‘Hey, stop the fun. You gotta win. It’s all about the belt.'”
